Malapascua, Philippines

Located off the northern tip of Cebu, Malapascua is a small island with a big reputation in the diving world. It’s one of the few places where divers can consistently spot thresher sharks, now more frequently seen at Kemod Shoal rather than the traditionally known Monad Shoal. My visits in 2016 and 2024 showed a clear shift—the sighting of thresher sharks in 2024 was more frequent and accessible, and the once-sleepy island has transformed into a vibrant tourist destination. The island also offers a rich macro diving scene: nudibranchs, frogfish, seahorses, and other hidden treasures await the keen eye. Gato Island boasts thriving coral gardens, especially stunning on clear days. Above water, the southern beaches treat you to vibrant, golden sunsets that light the horizon. However, like many marine destinations, it faces growing ecological pressures from tourism and climate change.

Fuvahmulah, Maldives, the southernmost island of Maldives is known as the shark island of Maldives. This is also heaven for other large pelagic creatures like Whale Sharks and Manta Ray and other kinds of sharks and in abundance. Presently the Island become famous for its unique but hidden ecosystem that has developed just outside the harbour. For ages, discarded Tuna fish heads and other parts have been thrown into the sea, unwittingly creating a natural habitat for Tiger Sharks. These sharks, known for their scavenging habits, have flocked to the area, and their population has quietly grown over the years.
